What is nitrous oxide?
A safe, effective anxiolytic and analgesic agent mixed with oxygen, used to increase comfort during procedures.
How does the system work?
A nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture is inhaled through a mouthpiece or mask and self-administered. Effects are felt within minutes and wear off 5–10 minutes after the last inhalation.
Will it put me to sleep?
No — the ratio is not strong enough for anesthesia. You can hear and respond throughout.
Can I drive home?
Nitrous alone clears within minutes, so it is generally reasonable to drive about 10 minutes after ceasing use if discharge criteria are met. Other medications may change that.
Are there side effects?
Usually minimal. Dizziness or nausea is possible — stop inhaling and breathe room air to reverse it.
